The National Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party (LP), led by Senator Nenadi Usman, officially commenced its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Wednesday at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
This event, aimed at reshaping the party’s future direction, saw the attendance of prominent figures, including the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; his running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed; and the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti.
Senators, members of the House of Representatives, and governorship candidates from Edo and Imo States, Olumide Akpata and Athan Achonu, were also present.
Caretaker Committee Chairlady’s Welcome Address
In her welcome address, Senator Usman called for unity within the party, urging members of the former National Working Committee (NWC), led by Julius Abure, to set aside their differences.
She commended the Supreme Court for its judgment on the party’s leadership crisis, describing it as a turning point for the Labour Party.

She is calling for all parties to sheathe their swords and work for the party following the Supreme Court ruling sacking Abure.

“The Supreme Court’s decision is a triumph for the rule of law, good governance, and all who stand for truth and sincerity of purpose,” Usman said. “This momentous decision marks an auspicious moment in our party’s history, where integrity and responsible leadership have been given legal validation.”
She appealed to aggrieved members to work together for the party’s success. “The time to make things right is now. The time to build a vibrant opposition is now. Nigeria belongs to all of us,” she stated.
Senator Usman further called on the Abure-led NWC and all Labour Party members, including those in the diaspora and the Obidient Movement, to join hands in rebuilding the party and strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
The NEC meeting also addressed the party’s governorship primaries in Anambra State, where George Moughalu emerged as the Labour Party’s candidate for the November 8, 2025, election. The party announced plans to review the primaries and communicate its position soon.
Peter Obi Denies Leaving Labour Party
During the meeting, Peter Obi firmly denied rumors of his departure from the Labour Party, reaffirming his commitment to the party’s future. “I’ve not told anybody that I’m leaving the Labour Party,” Obi stated, putting to rest any speculation.
Obi also addressed the state of the nation, urging party members to remain courageous and vocal in the face of challenges. “Nigeria is collapsing. The numbers are clear; the indices are clear—people are getting poorer every day,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of unity within the party, stating, “Labour Party has chosen to be a family, and we must do everything as a family. It’s not about Peter Obi’s choice; it’s everyone’s choice. This family excludes no one. We want to build a party that is fair and just.”
Looking ahead, Obi stressed the need for the party to prepare for future elections by presenting competent and loyal candidates for all positions.
“We want to correct the mistakes we made in the past. Anyone seeking to contest under our party must be a committed member, not just someone passing through. They must be competent,” he said.
