Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has dismissed reports suggesting he will leave his government advisory role soon, calling them “fake news.”
A senior White House official had reportedly told NBC News that Donald Trump discussed Musk’s transition back to the private sector during a cabinet meeting last month.
Politico also claimed Musk, who currently serves as a special government employee, would step away due to controversy surrounding his policies and the recent decline in Tesla stock value.
Musk responded on X, formerly Twitter, saying, “Yeah, fake news.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also denied the reports, calling them “garbage” and clarifying that Musk would only leave his post once his work at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was complete.
Uncertain Timeline for Musk’s Departure
NBC News reported that Musk’s term as a special government employee is set to expire after 130 days, which would be May 30. However, there is no official confirmation on whether he will leave on that date. The White House previously stated that DOGE, as a temporary agency, would be disbanded on July 4 next year, coinciding with the United States’ 250th Independence anniversary.
Musk’s leadership at DOGE has been controversial. He has pushed aggressive cuts across multiple federal agencies, eliminating entire departments and reducing the 2.3 million federal workforce by tens of thousands.
While Trump and his allies praised these moves as necessary reforms, critics argue they have created chaos and legal challenges.
DOGE’s Reforms Face Lawsuits and Threats
In recent weeks, several lawsuits have been filed against DOGE’s cost-cutting measures in both state and federal courts. The legal battles could complicate Musk’s mission to streamline government operations.
Musk also revealed that members of his DOGE team have received daily death threats, reflecting the strong opposition to the agency’s actions. “This level of hostility is insane, but we won’t back down,” he posted on X.
Despite speculation about his future, Musk remains defiant, continuing to implement aggressive reforms while dismissing media reports about his potential departure.
