King Charles was briefly hospitalized on Thursday, March 27, after experiencing side effects from his ongoing cancer treatment. Buckingham Palace confirmed that the 76-year-old monarch needed “a short period of observation” but returned to Clarence House the same day.
A palace statement said, “Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, the King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital. His Majesty’s afternoon engagements were, therefore, postponed.“
The King was expected to attend an event in Birmingham on Friday, March 28, but has now canceled it to focus on his recovery. “As a precautionary measure, acting on medical advice, tomorrow’s diary programme will also be rescheduled,” the palace said.
A royal source described his condition as “a minor bump in a road that is very much heading in the right direction.” The King was said to be in good spirits and continued working from his London residence, handling state documents and making calls.
He visited the London Clinic for his brief hospital stay and traveled to and from the hospital by car. Queen Camilla was not with him during the visit.
Upcoming Engagements Remain on Track
Despite his health concerns, Charles is set to continue with major royal duties. In 10 days, he is scheduled to visit Italy with Queen Camilla. During the trip, he will become the first British monarch to address both houses of the Italian parliament.
Since his cancer diagnosis in February 2024, Charles has maintained an active schedule. Earlier this month, he welcomed key political figures, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Last week, he completed a three-day visit to Northern Ireland alongside Camilla. The King, known for his dedication to work, has reportedly found his duties beneficial to his overall well-being.
While his treatment continues, his medical team remains involved in managing his royal schedule. The palace stressed that his hospital visit was not a major setback. “Any minor changes to his upcoming engagements will be announced in due course,” a spokesperson said.
Possible Rescheduling of Events
The King was originally scheduled to meet ambassadors at Buckingham Palace on Thursday afternoon, but those engagements were postponed. His Birmingham visit, which had four back-to-back events, has also been put on hold.
The London Clinic, where he was treated, is the same hospital where he had surgery for an enlarged prostate in January 2023 and where the Princess of Wales had abdominal surgery earlier this year.
While the palace has not disclosed the exact side effects Charles experienced, they are understood to be temporary and common with cancer treatments.
A spokesperson added, “His Majesty was due to receive credentials from the ambassadors of three different nations this afternoon. Tomorrow, he was due to undertake four public engagements in Birmingham and is greatly disappointed to be missing them. He very much hopes they can be rescheduled soon.“
