A gas explosion at Inner Galaxy Steel Company in Asa, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, killed two people and injured ten others.
The blast, which happened on Tuesday morning, March 25, 2025, was reportedly caused by a faulty gas valve.
According to the Abia State Police Command, the explosion caused massive damage to the factory. The company’s Chief Security Officer reported the incident to the police, confirming that the faulty valve led to the accident.
Ukwa West Mayor, Dike Briggs Nwankwo, immediately visited the scene. “Social media was flooded with reports, some claiming 20 people had died. I had to see for myself,” he said. He described the destruction, saying, “The explosion completely ripped apart the roof of the affected section.”
Factory management and local authorities reviewed CCTV footage which revealed the explosion happened while a customer was handling a gas cylinder valve.
“Twelve people were affected. Two died, while ten others are being treated in a hospital in Port Harcourt,” Nwankwo added. “Doctors say they are responding well to treatment.“
The authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine if there were lapses in safety protocols.
The steel company has yet to release an official statement regarding the explosion even as at press time.
