The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has officially started paying corps members the new monthly allowance of ₦77,000. This fulfills the promise made by NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu.
Corps members nationwide have confirmed receiving the increased stipend for March. The raise, up from ₦33,000, comes as part of efforts to align their pay with the new national minimum wage.
Corps Members Express Gratitude
The salary adjustment has brought joy to thousands of young graduates serving across the country. Many have taken to social media to share their excitement and appreciation.
“This is a big relief. The previous amount was barely enough for transport and feeding. Now, we can breathe easier,” said a corps member serving in Abuja.
Another in Lagos added, “We are grateful to the government for keeping their word. This will help us cope with the high cost of living.”
NYSC had assured corps members that the adjustment would take effect once the new minimum wage was fully implemented. Brigadier General Nafiu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to their welfare during a recent visit to NYSC zonal offices in Wuse and Garki, Abuja.
He commended corps members for their dedication and urged them to remain disciplined, patriotic, and focused on national development.
“With effect from March, you will receive ₦77,000 as your monthly allowance. NYSC keeps proper records, and I assure you, your money will be paid. The nation values your service,” he said.
General Nafiu also praised the NYSC for fostering unity among Nigerian youths. He said the scheme continues to bridge cultural gaps and instill leadership qualities, teamwork, and moral discipline in young graduates.
The new wage comes in the wake of a viral video by a youth corper, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, in which she complained bitterly over the economic hardships and corpers’ stagnant wage.
