Ghana and Morocco have agreed to allow citizens to travel between both countries without a visa. This agreement will be sent to their respective parliaments for approval in the coming weeks.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the decision after meeting with Morocco’s Ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil. He confirmed that both nations wish to deepen cooperation in key sectors like agribusiness, tourism, and security.
“I have held fruitful and assuring discussions with the Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Imane Ouaadil. Morocco and Ghana have also agreed to initiate a visa waiver agreement for all categories of travellers from both countries. The agreement will be presented to our parliaments for ratification shortly,” Ablakwa stated.
The new visa waiver is expected to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties, making travel and business easier for citizens of both nations.
Addressing Social Media Misinformation
Ablakwa also responded to concerns about alleged violence against Africans in Morocco. He said that reports claiming 700 Africans had been killed were false.
According to the Moroccan ambassador, the viral video circulating online was actually from a border incident on June 24, 2022, which resulted in 23 deaths.
“She has assured that Ghanaians and all Africans living in Morocco are safe, contrary to widely circulated videos falsely claiming that some 700 Africans were massacred. Apparently, the footage in question is from a tragic border incident on June 24, 2022, which led to the loss of 23 lives. That deplorable incident has since been investigated by Moroccan and Spanish authorities. It is worth noting that no Ghanaian casualty was recorded,” Ablakwa said.
As part of the growing partnership, Morocco has decided to increase its annual scholarships for Ghanaian students. The number has doubled from 90 to 180 this year, offering more opportunities for Ghanaian students to study in Moroccan universities.
In a separate meeting, Ablakwa also discussed bilateral relations with Russia’s Ambassador to Ghana, Sergei Berdnikov. Their talks focused on expanding cooperation between Ghana and Russia in various sectors.
