Cristiano Ronaldo had a dramatic night as Portugal secured a 5-2 win over Denmark in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals game on Sunday.
He scored a goal, missed a penalty, and received a Guinness World Record for the most international wins in history.
The match ended 3-3 on aggregate in regulation time, with Portugal overturning a 1-0 loss from the first leg. The hosts took the lead when Denmark’s Joachim Andersen accidentally headed Bruno Fernandes’ corner into his own net.
Ronaldo missed a sixth-minute penalty after Manchester United’s Patrick Dorgu fouled him in the box. Kasper Schmeichel guessed correctly and saved the shot. He later had a goal ruled out for offside just before halftime.
Portugal Seals Victory in Extra Time
Denmark equalized through Rasmus Kristensen early in the second half. In the 72nd minute, Ronaldo finally got on the scoresheet, scoring from close range after Schmeichel saved Fernandes’ effort.
Christian Eriksen responded for Denmark, slotting in a low cross from Dorgu to make it 2-2. However, Portugal refused to back down. Francisco Trincao put them ahead 3-2 in the 90th minute, sending the tie into extra time.
Trincao struck again in extra time to make it 4-2, and substitute Gonçalo Ramos sealed the victory with a fifth goal.
After the game, Ronaldo was awarded a Guinness World Record for securing 132 international wins, the most in football history.
Nations League Semi-Finals Set
Portugal will now face Germany in the semi-finals on June 4. Germany advanced after a thrilling 3-3 draw against Italy, progressing with a 5-4 aggregate win.
Spain secured their semi-final spot after beating the Netherlands 5-4 on penalties following a 3-3 draw. Spain will play France, who overturned a 2-0 first-leg loss against Croatia. Goals from Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembélé forced extra time, with Dayot Upamecano scoring the winning penalty.
