A tragic incident occurred in Calabar, Cross River State, when a police inspector, Effiong Bassey, opened fire, killing a woman and injuring two others.

The shooting took place around 6 a.m. Saturday at the Atakpa Divisional Police Station after Bassey returned from his night duty at a microfinance bank in Calabar South.

Sources say Bassey acted erratically upon returning from duty. Instead of handing over his AK-47 rifle, he cocked it and threatened his colleagues. He then blocked the station’s entrance, preventing anyone from going in or out. Officers tried to calm him down, but he refused to cooperate.

A security officer, who asked to remain anonymous, said, “He became hostile and wouldn’t listen to anyone. He was acting like someone in distress or under the influence.”

Seeing no progress, the police called for reinforcements. Tactical teams arrived to handle the situation, but as soon as Bassey saw them, he panicked and began shooting randomly.

Victims and Arrest

Three people were hit by bullets, including 41-year-old Mrs. Ijoema Obot, the wife of a retired police officer. She was rushed to the police clinic, where doctors confirmed her death.

The other two victims are being treated for their injuries.

The police eventually overpowered Bassey and took him into custody.

Police spokesperson Irene Ugbo confirmed the incident. “The matter is under control. We have arrested the suspect, and the victims are receiving treatment as we speak,” she said.

Authorities are investigating the cause of Bassey’s actions, including whether he had a history of mental health issues or other concerns.
