The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has strongly warned individuals, cybercafés, and organizations illegally printing National Identification Number (NIN) cards.

The commission said offenders would be prosecuted under the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007.

NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke spoke about the fraudulent activities linked to unauthorized NIN card printing.

The National Identity Management Commission has noticed some unscrupulous individuals, cybercafés, and organizations’ indiscriminate printing of unauthorized NIN cards and charging unsuspecting members of the public exorbitant fees,” Adegoke said.

He clarified that NIMC has not permitted any person or group to produce NIN cards outside of the officially sanctioned General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC).

These unauthorized cards have no legal standing. They should not be used as a form of identification,” he added.

To curb the illegal practice, NIMC has alerted security agencies, instructing them to arrest and prosecute anyone engaged in unauthorized card printing. “Anyone caught will be made to face the full wrath of the law,” Adegoke warned.

New Improved GMPC Cards Underway

In response to public concerns, NIMC announced plans to launch an improved GMPC. The new card will function as both an identification card and a payment card, powered by AfriGO, a local payment platform.

NIMC believes tit will enhance national identity security and prevent fraud.

The Commission urged Nigerians to report any unauthorized NIN card printing activities to the authorities.

It reaffirmed that the official NIN slip remains the only valid identification document and must be verified before use.
