The Super Eagles are back in contention for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They claimed their first victory in the qualifying series with a 2-0 win over second-placed Rwanda in Kigali on Friday.

Two goals from Victor Osimhen in the 10th minute and during the third minute of added time in the first half secured the three points and moved Nigeria to six points from five matches.

This victory coincided with other Group C teams dropping points, as Benin were held 2-2 by Zimbabwe on Thursday, while South Africa moved to the top of the group with a 2-0 win over Lesotho.

Lineups

The Super Eagles lined up with Francis Uzoho in goal, Ola Aina, William Troost-Ekong, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Zaidu Sanusi forming the defense. Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Samuel Chukwueze played in midfield, while Moses Simon, Victor Osimhen, and Ademola Lookman completed the attack.

Rwanda’s lineup featured Fiacre Ntwali in goal, Ange Mutzinsi, Gilbert Mugisha, Samuel Gueulette, and Djihad Bizimana among others.

How the Match Unfolded

The match began with drama as Victor Osimhen required medical attention after an injury in the first minute. Despite this, Nigeria pressed on, and in the 10th minute, Osimhen scored following a free kick earned by Moses Simon. This marked Osimhen’s 24th goal in 40 appearances.

Nigeria’s high press unsettled Rwanda, and the Eagles continued dominating. Osimhen’s dangerous cross in the 12th minute nearly resulted in an own goal by Ange Mutzinsi. Ekong missed a header from a corner kick in the 14th minute, while Ola Aina was fouled a minute later, leading to another wasted opportunity for Nigeria.

A cooling break came in the 16th minute, and play resumed with Moses Simon testing the Rwandan goalkeeper. Substitutions followed, with Gilbert Mugisha replacing Samuel Gueulette in the 37th minute. Just before halftime, Osimhen scored again with a clever chip over the goalkeeper, giving Nigeria a commanding 2-0 lead.
