The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast sunshine and hazy conditions across the country from Friday to Sunday. The agency also warned of potential heat stress due to rising temperatures and urged Nigerians to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure.
In a statement released on Thursday in Abuja, NiMet advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports to ensure smooth flight operations.
According to NiMet: “Sunny skies in hazy conditions are expected over the northern region on Friday, with a chance of thunderstorms in parts of Taraba in the afternoon or evening.”
Thunderstorms Expected in Several States
NiMet predicted varying weather conditions across different regions. It stated: “Sunny skies with patches of clouds are anticipated over the North Central region with isolated thunderstorms over Kogi and Benue states.
“Cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine will dominate the southern region, with morning thunderstorms expected in Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states. Later in the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms may occur in Imo, Abia, Enugu, Anambra, Edo, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Lagos states.”
The agency also forecast moderate dust haze for parts of Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Adamawa, and Bauchi on Saturday. The rest of the northern region will experience hazy sunshine.
For Sunday, NiMet predicted continued moderate dust haze in the north, while the North Central region will have sunny skies with some cloud patches.
The southern region will experience cloudy skies with possible thunderstorms in Ogun, Rivers, Cross River, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Delta, and Lagos states during the afternoon and evening.
Heat Stress and Health Precautions
NiMet warned that high temperatures in many parts of the country pose a risk of heat stress. “People should stay in well-ventilated and cool spaces, drink plenty of water, and avoid excessive sun exposure,” the statement read.
The agency also urged people with respiratory conditions, especially in the northern region, to take necessary precautions due to the dusty conditions.
