Sudan’s army says it has regained control of the presidential palace in Khartoum after intense battles with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The military announced the victory on Friday, describing it as a major step in reclaiming the capital.

The Sudanese army launched a coordinated attack to push RSF fighters out of central Khartoum. “Our forces completely destroyed the enemy’s fighters and equipment,” army spokesman Nabil Abdallah said on state television. “We seized large quantities of weapons.”

Soldiers shared videos online showing them inside the palace. Some celebrated, exchanging congratulations.

The RSF had controlled the palace since April 2023, when war erupted between the paramilitary group and the army. The RSF initially took over much of Khartoum, forcing government officials to relocate to Port Sudan.

Significance of the Takeover

Military analysts say this is a heavy blow to the RSF. “The army now controls central Khartoum. The RSF has lost its elite forces,” a military expert told reporters. The paramilitary had been using the palace as a base and weapons storage facility.

With this victory, the army has regained momentum. In January, it broke an RSF siege at its headquarters, allowing forces to merge and close in on the paramilitary fighters. “What remains of RSF fighters have fled into buildings,” a military source said.

Sudan’s conflict has caused massive suffering. Nearly two years of war have killed tens of thousands and displaced over 12 million people, creating the world’s worst hunger crisis.
