Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has also strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. He described the action as unconstitutional and an attack on democracy.

Makinde also announced that governors elected under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would challenge the decision in court. He said this was agreed upon at an emergency meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum on Wednesday.

The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of its government is illegal. Right-thinking Nigerians must oppose it,” he said.

PDP Governors to Challenge Emergency Declaration in Court

President Tinubu, on Tuesday, suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the state House of Assembly for six months. He also appointed Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas (Rtd.) as the state’s sole administrator.

Reacting to this, Makinde said democracy must be protected at all costs. “We must never allow our democratic principles to be violated. Our personal loyalties should not override fairness, equity, and justice,” he stated.

His remarks came in his biweekly newsletter, The Business of Governance Issue 110. He warned that ignoring such actions could set a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.

As our democracy grows, we must speak up against anything that threatens our national development,” he added. “Even if it means standing alone, we must stand for what is right.”

Makinde praised the PDP for standing firm. “I am glad that our great party is showing strength and leadership. Yesterday, the PDP Governors’ Forum unanimously agreed to challenge President Tinubu’s actions in court. We cannot stand by and watch nearly three decades of democracy be destroyed.

He called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and defend their democratic rights.
