President Trump Declassifies JF Kennedy Assassination Files After Decades of Secrecy

The administration of US President Donald Trump has released thousands of government files about the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy (JFK).

The National Archives uploaded about 63,000 pages of documents to its website on Tuesday. More files will be published once they are digitized.

All records previously withheld for classification that are part of the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection are released,” the National Archives said.

Speculation and Public Interest in JFK’s Death

The assassination of JFK on November 22, 1963, in Dallas has been surrounded by conspiracy theories for decades. Many Americans question the official investigation, which concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald, a former US Marine, acted alone.

A 2023 Gallup poll found that 65% of Americans do not believe the official findings. Among those surveyed, 20% think Oswald conspired with the US government, while 16% suspect CIA involvement.

Shortly after taking office in January 2024, Trump signed an executive order to declassify documents related to the assassinations of JFK, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Trump told reporters on Monday, “People have been waiting decades for this. I said during the campaign that I would do it, and I am a man of my word.”

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) said the release fulfils Trump’s promise of “maximum transparency” and aims to rebuild public trust in intelligence agencies.

Historians and Public Await New Insights

The newly released files are identified only by record numbers and lack descriptions. Scholars, journalists, and historians are expected to spend months analyzing the documents for new information about JFK’s assassination.

Trump said approximately 80,000 pages of previously classified records would be made public. The files could shed light on long-standing questions about the events surrounding JFK’s death.
