Oil Pipeline Explosion Hits Rivers State Amid Political Crisis; Cause Still Undetermined

A reported pipeline explosion occurred on the Trans-Niger Pipeline at Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, igniting the area in an inferno.

Authorities have yet to release a formal statement regarding the incident.

The explosion reportedly took place on Monday night along the critical export pipeline that transports crude to the Bonny Terminal.

It remains unclear whether the incident resulted from human interference or natural causes.

The area was a hotspot for Niger-Delta oil resource militancy about two decades ago.

Rivers State is currently embroiled in political turmoil, with key figures such as Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in opposing camps.

On Monday, former Niger-Delta warlord Alhaji Asari Mujaheed Dokubo warned that some elements within the Ijaw ethnic group, enraged by the political situation, might take matters into their own hands ahead of any formal agreement by the Ijaw people.

Governor Fubara is considered an ethnic Ijaw, a distinct tribe from Wike’s Ikwerre ethnic group.

The Ijaws have accused Minister Wike of making uncomplimentary remarks about their ethnicity in a recent interview he had.
