Russian President Vladimir Putin says Moscow is open to a ceasefire in Ukraine but insists any agreement must address the war’s root causes.
He made the remarks on Thursday during a press conference in Moscow after meeting Belarusian President u.
“We agree with the proposals to cease hostilities,” Putin said. “But we proceed from the fact that this cessation should lead to long-term peace and eliminate the original causes of this crisis.“
Russia’s Position on a Ceasefire
Putin’s statement follows ongoing advances by Russian forces since mid-2024. Reports indicate Russia now controls a sizeable portion of eastern Ukraine. The conflict, which began in February 2022, remains the most serious confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cold War.
U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to end the war. On Wednesday, he called for a 30-day ceasefire, urging Russia and Ukraine to pause hostilities immediately. “This bloodbath must stop,” Trump said.
Ukraine has signaled its willingness to support the ceasefire proposal, but Putin noted that further discussions are necessary.
“The idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it,” he said. “But there are issues that we need to discuss. And I think we need to talk to our American colleagues as well.”
Putin also hinted at a possible call with Trump to discuss the proposal further. “We support the idea of ending this conflict by peaceful means,” he stated.
Escalation in the Conflict
Meanwhile, Putin visited a Russian military command post in the Kursk region, near the Ukrainian border, wearing a green camouflage uniform. The visit comes as Russia intensifies military operations in eastern Ukraine. Reports indicate Ukrainian forces are struggling to hold key positions amid relentless Russian advances.
The international community continues to push for peace, but diplomatic efforts remain complex.
