Four communities in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State were attacked by suspected bandits early Saturday, leaving multiple casualties.
The affected villages—Aba Alajido, Aba Sunday, Aba Pastor, and Ademekun—were invaded, forcing many residents to flee.
Local police confirmed the attack on Monday, insisting that security forces were deployed to the area. “Our men were immediately deployed when we received the report on Saturday. So far, we have recovered 14 bodies, but searches are still ongoing,” said a police source.
However, some residents believe the death toll is much higher. Sunday, a community member said over 40 people had been killed.
“The attack started last week Monday, but Friday night was the worst. The gunmen shot at everyone in sight. Many ran into the bush, but others were not so lucky. Security officers have found some bodies, but many remain missing,” he explained.
Survivors Demand Government Action
Funmilayo Odunlami, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the attack and assured the public that investigations had begun.
“The incident was reported on Saturday, and we took immediate action. Officers are on the ground to restore order and track down the attackers,” she said.
Princess Adelowo Adekemisola, the Regent of Ademekun Community, expressed her frustration, stating that the violence has continued for years. “Fourteen people were killed in my community alone. These herdsmen came through the Edo-Ondo border and started shooting. We’ve been facing this problem for six years,” she said.
She called on the government and security agencies to protect the villages and prevent further attacks.
Community leaders and farmers met in Akure on Monday to discuss the growing security crisis and demand swift action from authorities.
Ondo State has had increasing security challenges in recent years, with attacks by armed groups affecting rural communities.
