President Bola Tinubu has defended his decision to remove fuel subsidies, saying it was necessary to secure Nigeria’s economic future. He made this statement on Monday during the inauguration of the National Youth Congress Planning Committee at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu assured Nigerian youths that his administration is focused on empowering them. He emphasized that government policies are designed to build a better future for younger generations.
“I’ve listened to you carefully. Today is not for long speeches, but I want to reassure you that you are the hope of the country. Every decision I’ve taken is about securing tomorrow,” Tinubu said.
The President explained that without subsidy removal, Nigeria would struggle to invest in infrastructure and economic growth. He linked the trend of young Nigerians leaving the country, popularly called ‘Japa,’ to a lack of local economic opportunities.
“If you grow prosperity back home and empower people, they will not bother to leave. They will stay, develop, and build their country,” he added.
Economy Showing Signs of Recovery
Tinubu claimed that despite initial hardships, Nigeria’s economy is improving. He cited falling prices, growing investor confidence, and advancements in technology as positive indicators.
“When we started, it looked foggy, dicey, and hopeless. We tried hard, fetching water from a dry well. But today, the economy has turned a corner,” he said.
The President encouraged young people to actively participate in shaping the country’s future. He urged them to share their concerns and suggestions with the government.
“Look at me in the face and tell me what is wrong. Tell me how you want things done. We will try to implement every suggestion that benefits the country.”
Youth Engagement and Development
To further support youth participation, Tinubu formally inaugurated the National Youth Congress Planning Committee. He tasked the members with using technology, improving farming conditions, and working towards food security.
“I like you all. I can’t be young again, maybe in the next life. I’m envious of you,” he joked.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, praised Tinubu for prioritizing young Nigerians. He said the upcoming youth conference would foster engagement and collaboration.
“The President is listening and ready to incorporate young people’s ideas into governance,” Olawande stated.
A committee member, Samson Itodo, who is also the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, acknowledged Tinubu’s effort in recognizing the youth’s role in national development.
