Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has assured residents that the reconstruction of Port Harcourt Road in Aba will be completed and ready for commissioning before May 29, 2025. The road, currently undergoing major repairs by Julius Berger Construction Company, is part of his administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure in the state.
Speaking during a media briefing in Umuahia, Governor Otti reiterated that “Project Ekwueme“, which includes the Port Harcourt Road reconstruction, is entirely funded by the Abia State Government.
He dismissed speculation that the project relied on external funding, stating, “Every kobo for this project comes from the Abia State Government. We are committed to delivering quality roads without waiting for federal intervention.”
Infrastructure, Power, and Civil Service Payments
Gov. Otti also provided updates on ongoing initiatives to enhance power supply across the state. He revealed that the “Light Up Abia” project is being expanded to more communities. “We have distributed many transformers to different areas so residents are not left in darkness due to faulty equipment,” he said.
Addressing concerns about the welfare of civil servants, the governor announced that he had directed the Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic (formerly Abia State Polytechnic) to begin verifying the status of disengaged staff and facilitate their payments.
Additionally, he confirmed that payments for retired Permanent Secretaries, dating back to October 2023, have been approved. “We are making sure those who have served the state receive what is due to them,” he added.
On the renovation of Government House, Otti acknowledged the need for refurbishment but said that other priorities, such as health, education, and infrastructure, take precedence. “Government House renovation is important, but it is not as urgent as fixing schools, hospitals, and roads. However, we will begin work on it in due time,” he said.
The governor expressed gratitude to the people of Abia for their continued support and assured them of his administration’s commitment to development. “This is just 21 months into our administration. The next 21 months will be filled with even more activities,” he promised.
