The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved ₦679 billion for 13 major road projects across Nigeria. These projects include road rehabilitations, new constructions, and contract variations to ensure infrastructure development aligns with available funds.
Speaking after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu, Minister of Works David Umahi explained the breakdown of the contracts. He emphasized the need to focus on ongoing projects and protect already completed work.
A key project is the Zaria-Ukui-Kolomani-Kanya-Kasa Road, spanning Kaduna and Katsina states. The government has awarded the contract to MotherCat Nigeria Limited for ₦198 billion, with a 36-month completion timeline.
In Bauchi State, the Aakalari-Ukuk Road will be completed in phases. Phase One is set for six months at ₦11.278 billion. Similarly, in Abia State, the Uturu-Isikwato-Akara Road will receive ₦5.926 billion for its first phase, also with a six-month duration.
The Kano-Maiduguri Road will also get an upgrade, specifically a section previously terminated at Dantata Sowo. The new contract, assigned to Tractor Nigeria Limited, is valued at ₦128.395 billion and will take 18 months to complete.
Other key road projects include:
- Bagudu Road (Kebbi State) – ₦2.645 billion
- Obanewi-Arisizogu-Okiwe Road (Imo & Anambra States) – ₦8.45 billion
- Enyi-Ilawi-Ekiti Road (Ekiti State) – Revised to ₦15.626 billion
- Ilogu Road (Kwara/Osun States) – ₦7.556 billion
- Wukari-Akwana Road (Taraba State) – ₦12.615 billion
- Bida-Lapaya-Lambda Road (Niger State) – ₦39.493 billion
- Gada-Zamazuru-Gamji Road (Kebbi State) – ₦11.976 billion
- Kamakish Road (Oyo State) – ₦12.35 billion
Umahi said that the FEC has directed the Ministry to prioritize inherited projects while ensuring road infrastructure is protected from rainfall damage. Some roads already have binder courses, and delays in completing them could lead to further deterioration.
Additionally, the FEC approved an adjustment to the Outer Marina Shore Protection Project in Lagos. Initially, the contract sum was ₦144 billion, but an increase to ₦176 billion was approved to include shoreline protection for Nigerian Navy infrastructure.
The Charm-Numan Road and Bridge Project was also reviewed after severe flood damage in October 2024. A revised contract was approved to ensure its completion.
Finally, the Aba-Ikot Ekpene Road dualization will be executed in phases. The first phase was awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited for ₦30 billion.
The Minister assured Nigerians that all projects will be executed within budgetary allocations to guarantee timely completion.
“The directive of the Federal Executive Council is to prioritize inherited projects and execute them based on available funds,” Umahi said. “Our focus is to use the allocated budget wisely and protect the roads from damage.”
