The Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Prof. (Mrs.) Ngozi Odu, has denied rumors that she has resigned from office.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by her Press Secretary, Owupele Benebo, the deputy governor stated that she wishes to “categorically debunk the false and misleading reports” suggesting she has stepped down.
A viral social media video had claimed that Odu resigned amidst rising political tension and speculation of a possible impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Constitutionally, if a governor is impeached, the deputy governor must be sworn in to take over. Mrs. Odu has reportedly remained loyal to her boss throughout the challenges posed by the governor’s political detractors, led by former governor and current Minister of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike.
The statement from the Deputy Governor’s Office reads in part: “Contrary to these baseless claims, Her Excellency remains committed to her duties as Deputy Governor, a position she was duly elected to serve alongside His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, the Executive Governor of Rivers State.”
Describing her as a seasoned public servant and academic, the statement further emphasized her dedication to the administration’s vision and her ongoing contributions to governance and policy implementation in the state.
“Her exemplary leadership and expertise have been invaluable to the administration, and she remains steadfast in her commitment and support to His Excellency, Sir Dr. Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS,” the statement added.
The Deputy Governor’s Office urged the public to disregard the viral reports, labeling them as malicious speculation aimed at misleading the people.
The statement concluded: “We urge the public to disregard these unfounded reports, which are clearly the product of malicious speculation.”
If Prof. (Mrs.) Odu were to resign, it could pave the way for the Speaker of the House of Assembly to temporarily assume the governor’s seat until a new election is held.
In Nigeria’s history, only one woman has ever served as a state governor. Mrs. Dame Virginia Ngozi Etiaba briefly held the position of Governor of Anambra State from November 2006 to February 2007, following the impeachment of maverick politician Peter Obi.
