Pope Francis has been placed back on non-invasive mechanical ventilation after suffering two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, the Vatican confirmed today.
The 88-year-old Pontiff, who has been battling pneumonia in both lungs, reportedly experienced severe bronchospasms and a build-up of mucus in his airways.
“Today, the Holy Father suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm,” the Vatican’s statement read.
Doctors performed two bronchoscopies to clear his lungs. Despite the crisis, the Pope remained “alert, oriented, and cooperative at all times.”
Pope’s Health Declines After Weekend Recovery
The latest setback comes just days after the Vatican assured the public that Pope Francis had been recovering well, following a coughing fit on Friday evening.
Earlier today, the Pontiff issued a message from the hospital, addressing what he called a “planetary crisis” in a letter to the Pontifical Academy for Life.

The message came after Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, a close friend, urged the Pope to make his voice heard. “We need men like him who are truly universal and not only one side,” Paglia said.
Francis remains under close medical supervision at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he has spent the last 17 days. The Vatican says his prognosis remains uncertain.
