A petrol tanker explosion at Gabstab Mega Petrol Station in Orita Challenge, Ibadan, killed two people in the early hours of Tuesday, March 4, 2025.
The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed the victims were the tanker driver and his assistant, who were trapped and burnt beyond recognition.
“We got information about the fire at 5:15 am, and our men responded swiftly,” said General Manager Yemi Akinyinka.
Brake Failure Led to the Fire
Investigations revealed the tanker lost control due to brake failure, spilling fuel that quickly caught fire.
Eyewitnesses said the flames spread rapidly, leaving the driver and his assistant no chance to escape.
Firefighters from the state fire service and private agencies worked to control the blaze, while security officers prevented it from spreading to nearby buildings.
Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform, Moroof Akinwande, confirmed that the fire was eventually put out, and officials have secured the area.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has taken custody of the victims’ remains and is expected to release further updates.
This incident comes just two months after a similar tanker explosion near Fijabi House, Agbowo, where a driver died, and another person suffered serious injuries.
