Lucky Aiyedatiwa Sworn In as Ondo Governor, Pledges Economic Growth

Lucky Aiyedatiwa has officially taken office as the Governor of Ondo State, marking the start of his first full four-year term. He first assumed leadership in December 2023 after the death of former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The swearing-in ceremony happened on Monday at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure. Aiyedatiwa took the oath of office at 12:59 p.m., right after his deputy, Olayide Adelami. Thousands of supporters cheered as he rode around the complex in an open van, waving to the crowd.

“We Will Not Rest” – Aiyedatiwa Vows to Serve

In his speech, Governor Aiyedatiwa promised to work tirelessly for the people of Ondo State.

The overwhelming renewed mandate you have given us comes with a huge responsibility. We promise never to rest on our oars,” he declared.

He assured citizens that his administration would prioritize the welfare of the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. “We will govern with the fear of God and utmost dedication to progress.

The governor also laid out ambitious economic plans. “In the next four years, we will work with investors and development partners to make Port Ondo a reality. We will also ensure that our vast bitumen deposits are explored for local use and export, generating huge revenue for the state.

High-Profile Attendees and a Landslide Victory

Several dignitaries attended the event, including APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and former Osun State Governor Bisi Akande. Other notable figures included Ogun State’s former Governor Olusegun Osoba, Minister of Youth Ayodele Olawande, and Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

Aiyedatiwa’s path to this moment wasn’t easy. He won the November 16, 2024, governorship election after a tough contest with Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The APC candidate secured a decisive victory, winning all 18 local government areas with 366,781 votes, while Ajayi polled 117,845 votes.

The Road Ahead

Aiyedatiwa’s leadership also began under challenging circumstances. He stepped in as governor on December 27, 2023, after Akeredolu’s passing. Before his death, Akeredolu had officially handed over power, ensuring a smooth transition.

After securing the APC ticket, Aiyedatiwa defeated 17 other candidates in the election. His victory signals strong public support, and expectations are high for his administration.

As he takes full control of the state’s future, residents of Ondo will be watching to see how he delivers on his promises for the Sunshine State.
