Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has accused former US President Donald Trump of trying to “become an emperor of the world.”
Lula made this statement on Thursday, January 20, urging Trump to respect other countries’ sovereignty.
“Post-World War II democracy has been an example of the best governance of the last 70 years,” Lula said during an interview with a local radio station. He criticized Trump’s behavior, claiming that “he is trying to become an emperor of the world.”
“He is trying to chime in on all countries and in all public policies,” Lula added.
Trump’s Comments on Zelensky
Lula’s comments followed Trump’s criticism of Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky, whom Trump labelled a “dictator without election.”
He squarely put the blame for the Russia-Ukraine war on Zelensky and has shown a preference for direct talks with Russia to end the war, bypassing Kyiv and European backers.
The Brazilian leader did not provide specific examples of Trump’s emperor aspiration but simply reiterated that “Trump must realize that the sovereignty of each country must be respected.”
Economic Partnership and Protectionism
Lula, who has not spoken with Trump since taking office in January, emphasized the significance of the US as a commercial partner to Brazil. He called for greater gestures of “friendship.”
“We want this protectionism to stop,” he said, referring to tariffs announced by Washington on Brazilian products such as steel.
Lula’s critique comes amid growing global worries about Trump’s foreign policy choices. The Brazilian president wants national sovereignties to be respected and deeper economic cooperation done in an attitude of mutual respect and interdependence.
Lula’s focus on ending protectionism highlights Brazil’s desire for fair trade practices.
