The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has confirmed that premium motor spirit (PMS) from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) meets industry standards.

This comes after a viral video claimed that NNPCL petrol does not last as long as that from Dangote Refinery.

NNPCL itself had previously dismissed the video as baseless and unfounded. The company said, for context, that most of its petrol products in Lagos are in fact sourced from Dangote Refinery.

PETROAN’s Response

Reacting to the controversy, PETROAN’s spokesperson, Joseph Obele, came down on the site of the state oil giant.

As part of our oversight function in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry, PETROAN engages independent standard laboratories to test and verify the quality of petroleum products before lifting them from any depot or refinery.”

Our comprehensive tests include flash point, density, viscosity, sulphur content, water content, and ash content tests. The results are satisfactory, demonstrating that NNPCL petroleum products meet and exceed the required industry standards,” PETROAN asserted.

Specific Test Results

Going even further, Obele claimed, the flash point test exceeds the minimum requirement, indicating a low risk of ignition. The density test meets prescribed standards, ensuring optimal engine performance and fuel efficiency.

The viscosity test falls within an acceptable range, ensuring smooth engine operation and minimizing wear and tear. The sulphur content test meets regulatory limits, reducing the risk of engine corrosion and environmental pollution. The water content test is well below the maximum allowable limit, ensuring fuel stability and preventing engine problems. The ash content test meets regulatory limits, reducing the risk of engine wear and tear.

Therefore Obele urged the public to disregard fabricated content and rely on verified sources for accurate information.

The association, he claims, promotes fair competition and supports the growth of the downstream petroleum sector in Nigeria.

PETROAN encourages healthy competition among industry players, focusing on improving products and services, investing in research and development, and prioritizing customer satisfaction,” Obele concluded.
