Elon Musk‘s artificial intelligence company xAI unveiled its latest chatbot, Grok 3, on Monday. Musk hopes Grok 3 will find traction in the competitive AI sector, competing with the likes of ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek.
“Grok is to understand the universe,” Musk said during the Grok 3 launch presentation. “We’re driven by curiosity about the nature of the universe—that’s also what causes us to be a maximally truth-seeking AI, even if that truth is sometimes at odds with what is politically correct.“
He said Grok 3 is “scary smart,” and has 10 times the computational resources of its older sibling Grok 2.
The flagship product of xAI was trained on synthetic data and employs self-correction mechanisms to avoid errors, known as “hallucinations,” that plague some AI chatbots.
“Grok 3 has very powerful reasoning capabilities,” Musk said in a video call with the World Governments Summit in Dubai. “In the tests that we’ve done thus far, Grok 3 is outperforming anything that’s been released, that we’re aware of, so that’s a good sign.”
Access and Capabilities
Grok 3 is powered by xAI’s Colossus supercomputer, which reportedly houses over 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs to provide 200 million GPU hours for training. This immense computational power enables Grok 3 to process large datasets quickly and accurately, setting a new standard in AI performance.
Built in just over eight months, Grok 3 was trained on synthetic datasets using machine learning techniques such as reinforcement learning.
Grok 3 features the DeepSearch tool, a new AI-powered smart search engine that explains its thought process and how it formulates responses.
Currently, Grok 3 is available exclusively to X Premium Plus subscribers. Users can upgrade their subscription on X (formerly Twitter) to access Grok 3’s AI capabilities through the Grok iOS app or the newly launched Grok website.
An Android version is also available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store.
For those seeking the most advanced features, xAI introduced Super Grok, a premium subscription tier. This plan grants priority access to the latest AI developments. Grok 3 will receive frequent updates, with improvements rolling out as often as every 24 hours. Users are encouraged to check for the latest enhancements to optimize their experience.
Musk Explains Origin of Grok
During the live demonstration, Musk explained the origin of the name “Grok,” derived from Robert Heinlein’s science fiction novel “Stranger in a Strange Land.” In the novel, “grok” means to fully and profoundly understand something. Musk highlighted that this deep understanding and empathy are key attributes of Grok 3.

As Grok 3 rolls out to Premium Plus subscribers on the X platform, users can look forward to a new era of AI interaction and development.
The chatbot’s advanced features and innovative design promise to revolutionize human understanding and engagement with artificial intelligence.
