In a dramatic turn of events, armed security officers from the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly early Monday morning.
The security personnel sealed the offices of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the Clerk of the House. This action follows the recent legal challenge by former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed from office on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct.
The security operation took place at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, with armed personnel taking control of the area and thoroughly searching individuals passing through. Despite the heavy security presence, Speaker Meranda arrived at the premises with her convoy at approximately 11:15 a.m.
Lawmakers condemned the invasion, describing it as a “rape of democracy” and a “national embarrassment.” They demanded an explanation from the Lagos State Director of DSS and called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene to prevent further escalation.

The Assembly has suspended plenary indefinitely and resolved to investigate the incident.
The situation remains tense although the 36 lawmakers of the House immediately convened and pass a vote of confidence on the leadership of the Speaker Meranda and insist on protecting the independence of the legislature.
