Nigeria has been plunged into darkness yet again. The national grid suffered another collapse on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 – the second such collapsed this year.
The grid’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, @NationalGridNg, confirmed the incident. “There was a ‘GRID DISTURBANCE’ before noon today. Parts of the country experienced outage. Further information shortly,” the post stated.
Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company also confirmed the collapse, reporting on X that the “system outage happened…at 11:34 am.” The company added, “Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders.”
Widespread Power Outages
Abuja Electricity Distribution Company followed suit, informing their customers, “We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today causing a power outage across our franchise areas.”
They assured customers that they were “working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilized.”
This latest collapse is indicative of the perennial challenges with Nigeria’s power infrastructure across several generations of Nigerians, and governments.
It is the second such incident in 2025. Last year, the national grid experienced a total of 12 collapses. These frequent disruptions continue to negatively impact homes, businesses, and the overall economy.
Worse still, Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, recently commented that power outages may likely remain a common feature in Nigeria for the foreseeable future.
