A tragic fire incident at the Makarantar Mallam Ghali Islamic school in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State on Tuesday, claimed at least 17 lives—all children.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in a nearby house and quickly spread to the school. The fire, which burned for about three hours, trapped many children inside the building.
Local residents reported that the fire was caused by stored sticks known as “kara,” which are used for oral hygiene. The fire spread rapidly, engulfing the study hall where the children were sleeping.
The Zamfara State Fire Service confirmed the incident and attributed the delay in fighting the fire to technical issues with their firefighting equipment. Despite the efforts of local volunteers and police officers, many children were trapped inside the building.
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the incident and sent condolences to parents, guardians, and families who lost loved ones in the inferno.
In a statement, Bayo Onanuga, the president’s spokesman, said the president commiserates with the state government and school owners and prayed for the quick recovery of those receiving medical attention.
The president enjoined all public and private schools to prioritize children’s safety and security at all times. He directed regulatory authorities in the education sector to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Tinubu also prayed God to grant eternal rest to the souls of the departed and comfort to their loved ones.
