A Republican House member from Tennessee, Andy Ogles, has introduced a bill seeking to amend the US Constitution to allow President Donald Trump to run for a third term.
The proposed amendment would revise the 22nd Amendment, which currently limits a president to two terms.
According to Ogles, Trump “has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness.”
He praised Trump’s executive orders on his first day in office, including handling the southern border, restricting gender identities to male and female, ramping up domestic energy production, and withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO).
Ogles believes Trump must be given more time to accomplish his goals, saying, “It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.“
How Likely Is a Trump Third Term?
It’s unclear if a constitutional provision can be amended merely by a House resolution, and if Mr Ogles is only rubbing the ego of the new president. But Trump himself after winning the 2024 presidential election did not foreclose such proposition during a chat with Republican lawmakers.
Hinting at a possible third term, Trump said, “I suspect I won’t be running again, unless you do something… Unless you say, ‘he’s so good, we have to just figure it out’.“
The 22nd Amendment was proposed in 1947 and adopted in 1951 to prevent a president from serving more than two terms, following President Franklin Roosevelt’s four terms in office.
It will require the concurrence of both Congress and Senate for such an amendment to pass.
