A former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign council spokesman, Dele Momodu, has traced the curious party squabbles and infighting in the opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mr. Momodu, who was a presidential aspirant in 2023, said the conflicts within the PDP, Labour Party (LP), and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) were all being orchestrated by the APC to weaken the opposition.
In an interview on Thursday with Arise Television, he said he feared the way the politics of Nigeria was evolving, the ruling party was leading the country inexorably to a one-party state.
“Nigeria is obviously moving in a direction of a one-party state. The ruling party, APC, is so scared of opposition that crises are being orchestrated from party to party, especially the leading opposition parties like PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP. It’s obvious what is going on.”
Saying he was uncertain about the future of democracy in Nigeria, he remarked, “No one is in doubt about that. How this would end, I have no idea. So, we are watching.”
He reminded those aligned with the APC that power is temporary. “The maximum they would do is eight years, so after that, what next? It’s not about how long, it’s about how well.”
Momodu advised the president to be mindful of sycophants around him who may be misleading him.
“He would think they love him—No! It’s self-preservation because they lost out in one party. They ran to Asiwaju, and now they are using him as an umbrella when they should be holding the broom,” he metaphorically added.
The umbrella is the symbol of the main opposition PDP, while the broom is for the APC.
