On Tuesday night, a violent incident on Tel Aviv’s Nahalat Binyamin Street resulted in the stabbing of at least four persons.
After a preliminary assessment, police verified the assault as a terrorist attack. They went on to report the offender stabbed three persons on Nahalat Binyamin Street, followed by a fourth victim on neighbouring Gruzenberg Street.
The attacker was shot, with multiple eyewitnesses saying he was killed by civilians. Police have confirmed this.
According to Israeli media, there was a border control ticket and an American resident permit found on the body of the attacker. They believe the assailant, a Moroccan national with permanent residency in the United States, entered Israel on a tourist visa on January 18.
Interior Minister Moshe Arbel said that border control officers at Ben Gurion Airport refused to let in the terrorist and demanded that an investigation be opened into the matter, but unfortunately, Shin Bet agents overruled the decision and permitted him to enter Israel.
According to Arbel, officers “transferred him to security officials for questioning, who unfortunately decided to allow his entry into Israel.” The minister called on Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) chief Ronen Bar “to investigate the serious incident and draw lessons from it as soon as possible.“
Tel Aviv District Commander Asst.-Ch. Haim Sargaroff said the terrorist was acting alone. “The incident is over. There were many [conflicting] reports, but I can say that there was one terrorist. There are no others,” he assured.
Medics and paramedics are providing medical treatment to those wounded in the incident.
