The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is facing another internal scandal after an officer in charge of the Kaduna Zonal Office’s exhibit room allegedly absconded with over $30,000 and other valuable exhibits.
The scandal came to light after the zonal director, Benedict Ubi, ordered an audit of the directorate’s exhibit room following a similar internal heist in Lagos.
According to another online news platform, Daily Nigerian, which nosed into these scandals, the officer, identified as Polycarp, vanished after being informed of the audit. “Immediately after the order for the audit was given, he took an excuse to ease himself and fled,” said a source familiar with the development.
The EFCC has launched a manhunt to trace the fleeing officer’s whereabouts.
This latest scandal adds to the commission’s growing list of internal corruption cases. In 2019, an official was indicted for receiving a $20,000 bribe but was later reinstated.
In 2021, an officer was dismissed for helping suspects unfreeze their accounts and drop charges.
Since its establishment in 2003, the EFCC has announced the dismissal of 27 officers, but internal scandals have marred the commission’s credibility.
The EFCC has yet to respond to the trending news as of publication time.
