A petrol tanker exploded in Ibadan, Oyo State, in the early morning hours of Wednesday, resulting in the death of the driver and injuries to another person.
Yemi Akinyinka, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, confirmed the incident in a statement on Wednesday.
Akinyinka explained that the tanker lost control, hit two other trucks, overturned into a pit then burst into flames. “The incident happened around Fijabi House, Agbowo, and Ojoo/Iwo Road Expressway,” he said. The agency received a call about the fire at 2:45 a.m.
Fire service personnel quickly rushed to the scene and managed to stop the fire from spreading to nearby homes.
Upon arrival, they found three trucks on fire, spaced 20 meters apart. “The driver was burnt to death while the motor boy was rescued alive and taken to the University College Hospital in Ibadan for treatment,” Akinyinka noted.
He said the explosion destroyed the tanker, but the agency’s team managed to save the other two trucks.
Akinyinka added that Ismail Adeleke, the agency’s director of operations, worked alongside police and other security teams to maintain order.
Recently, a separate explosion in Niger State killed 98 people when individuals attempted to collect leaking fuel. The president, Bola Tinubu, ordered an enquiry.
Ibadan explosion is only one of several. At least 285 persons have lost their lives to fuel tanker-related explosions in the last five months.
