The Kano State Censorship Board, which oversees Kannywood—northern Nigeria’s version of Nollywood—has banned singer Usman Sojaboy and actresses Shamsiyya Muhammad and Hasina Suzan from participating in any Kannywood-related activities in the state.
This decision follows the circulation of a video deemed to contradict the Islamic religion and Kano’s culture and values, prompting numerous complaints from the public and the ulama.
The board’s action is part of its ongoing efforts to regulate expressions that do not align with Kano’s values and uphold moral standards in the Kannywood industry.
“Sojaboy had been warned multiple times about his immoral and vulgar content,” said Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, the board’s Information Officer.
The board did not mention the offensive contents that necessitated the penalty, but here is one of Sojaboy’s hit song, Sila.
The Executive Secretary, Abba El-Mustapha, reiterated, “Our board will not tolerate any form of immorality in Kano from whosoever, and as from today, Sojaboy and his associates are no longer members of the industry.“
This is not the first time the Kano State Censorship Board has taken action against Kannywood artists. In the past, actresses like Rahama Sadau and Nafeesat Abdullahi were suspended for similar accusations.
The board has also imposed bans on other artists, including Abdul Saheer, also known as Malam Ali Kwana Casain, who was banned for two years for sharing pornographic content.
Nigeria is roughly divided between a majority Muslim north and a majority Christian south, which often leads to schisms over evolving common grounds on several policy issues.
