Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has revealed that he refused to perform any rituals before his election. He attributed his victory to his unwavering faith in God, earning him the nickname “miracle governor.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, on Saturday, Diri shared his experience during the Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area Annual Day of Thanksgiving in Sampou.

Diri recounted how someone invited him to Abuja and encouraged him to perform rituals to become governor. He declined the offer, citing his faith in God.

I thank God and also thank Apostle David Zilly Aggrey because he started this event. And because his prayers were heard, God made it possible to bring me in, and today, it is by law that all Kolokuma/Opokuma people can gather to praise God,” Diri said.

Journey to Governor’s Office

He continued, “Let me reveal to you why it is important to thank God and have faith in Him. Some time ago, a senior citizen of this country invited me to Abuja and asked me to perform certain sacrifices, but I declined. I told him my faith in God would not allow me to do it. He got angry and told me I would never become governor.

Diri explained that the man had spent $10,000 to arrange the rituals and demanded a refund, which Diri provided. When the Supreme Court ruled in Diri’s favour, the man was shocked and could not contact him. Sadly, the man passed away sometime later.

The story I have narrated was witnessed by my deputy and a friend in Abuja as both of them accompanied me to visit the senior citizen,” Diri added.

Diri said it is essential always to be thankful to God and maintain faith in Him. He urged the people of Kolokuma/Opokuma to be civil in politics and recognize that God rules man’s affairs.

Kolokuma/Opokuma people have every reason to thank God. As a state, we do not want anybody to be harmed in the name of politics because we do not know who God has destined for greatness,” he said.

Diri’s journey to office was dramatic. In 2020 the Supreme Court invalidated the 2019 Bayelsa State gubernatorial election results because the running mate of the winner, David Lyon, submitted an inappropriate certificate to the election umpire. The court ordered Diri who came second in the election to be declared the governor.

He frequently attends church services at The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries (TLCCRM) of Senior Pastor Lazarus Muoka.
