South Korea‘s impeached President, Yoon Suk Yeol, was detained during a major law enforcement operation at the presidential compound on Wednesday.
He claimed that the anti-corruption agency lacked the authority to investigate him but complied to prevent violence. In a video message, he expressed that the “rule of law has completely collapsed” in the country.
Yoon, the first sitting president to be arrested, had been barricaded in his residence for weeks, vowing to “fight to the end” against efforts to remove him. Investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office, looking into Yoon’s declaration of martial law as potentially rebellious, detained him about five hours after arriving.
He was seen being escorted to the agency’s office and could face weeks of custody. The anti-corruption agency has 48 hours to request a formal arrest on rebellion charges. Yoon invoked his right to remain silent during questioning and insisted that his martial law declaration was necessary to counter opposition that stymied governance.
A standoff occurred at the presidential compound with Yoon’s security forces, who initially blocked entry before yielding to police.
Following the detainment, South Korea’s acting leader reassured foreign diplomats that the government is stable.
Opposition lawmakers celebrated Yoon’s arrest as a step toward restoring democracy.
