Senator John Azuta-Mbata, the newly elected President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, paid a courtesy visit to Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti on January 14, 2025.
The visit took place at Governor Otti’s Umuehim Nvosi country home in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.
During the visit, Governor Otti congratulated Senator Azuta-Mbata on his new role and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the Igbo socio-cultural group.
“I have known you for decades; your capacity and what you stand for. I do not doubt that in this role, you will continue to do what you have been known for: consistency, truthfulness, fairness, equity, and transparency,” Governor Otti told the new Ohanaeze leader.
Gov Otti assured Mr Mbata of his and his colleagues’ support for the success of the new Ohanaeze leadership. He emphasized unity and the collective interest of the Igbo people. “Our interest is the development and unity of our people. Ohanaeze should be focused on uniting the people and creating leadership of our heritage so that we can all do well as a people,” Otti asserted.
Senator Azuta-Mbata thanked Governor Otti for his support and acknowledged the governor’s role in his emergence as President-General. He assured that he would work closely with Governor Otti and the other six governors to pursue common goals.
“We will come and pay an official visit with the new Exco, but on a personal level, I thought that we should come and register our gratitude and tell you that we will consult, collaborate, and cooperate,” Mbata said.
John Mbata – The New PG
Senator Azuta-Mbata, a former senator from Rivers State, was elected President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo on January 10, 2025. He succeeded Fidelis Chukwu, who completed the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu’s tenure.
His election is significant, as he is the first PG from Rivers State—from an Igbo subgroup, the Ikwerre, although this assertion is not without controversy.
Mr Mbata brings extensive experience from his time in the Senate, where he served from 1999 to 2007.
The visit has been hailed as a good start in reaching out to all stakeholders, reconciling and uniting the organization’s factions in order to effectively work towards common goals and the development of the Igbo nation.
