Security personnel, believed to be from the Department of State Services (DSS), have taken activist Mahdi Shehu.
Plainclothes officers reportedly picked up Mahdi at his clinic in Unguwar Dosa in Kaduna around 11:00 a.m.
There has been no official statement from security agencies about his arrest.
Mahdi’s son, Buhari Mahdi, said they have not been able to reach his father.
“We don’t know if it was an arrest or an invitation,” he said. “But they picked him up at his clinic in Unguwar Dosa, Kaduna, around 11:00 a.m.” He did not provide more details.
In December 2024, the activist was arrested, accused of sharing a misleading information on social media.
The Kaduna State High Court granted him bail on January 9, 2025. Bail was set at ₦3 million and required two prominent clerics as sureties.
This incident comes a few days after Mahdi spoke out about his ordeal.
He thanked his supporters on social media for their concern and prayers. “During my arrest, detention, and incarceration spanning 12 days, I must thank those who were genuinely worried and supportive,” he said.
“I felt your prayers, and they served their purpose,” he continued.
He also acknowledged those who were pleased by his situation.
“Those who were happy and celebrative emboldened me and changed my worldview,” he stated. He compared them to fans who cheer for a winning team.
Mahdi addressed those who remained indifferent, saying, “This class neither supported nor prayed, but their silence will affect them one day.”
Finally, he apologized for being unable to respond to over four million messages he claimed he received on his various social media accounts.
