Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa was on Monday, 13 January 2025, impeached by members of the House.
Mojisola Meranda (APC, Apapa State Constituency I) was immediately appointed Obasa’s replacement, making her the first female speaker of the state Assembly.
The Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Fatai Mojeed, was elected Deputy Speaker.
Obasa has been engulfed in a series of controversial financial dealings, including mishandling constituency funds and projects and official high-handedness.
Furthermore, Mr Obasa appears to have recently lost favour following his controversial comments on the Lagos 2027 governorship race.
In November last year, when Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the 2025 budget to the House, Obasa stoked controversy by declaring that he was not too young or lacked the experience to run for Lagos governor, insisting that “those who have been before me are not better off.”
His comments could have ruffled some feathers. However, the former speaker denied being directly interested in the governorship seat.
Incumbent Gov. Sanwo-Olu will be leaving office in 2027.
There has been speculation that Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, may be angling to replace Sanwo-Olu as the next governor of Lagos State—Nigeria’s commercial capital.
