A dark horse, Senator Azuta Mbata, has been elected as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide.
The election just concluded Friday, January 10, in Enugu, the political capital of Eastern Nigeria.
The post of President-General had been zoned to Rivers State, one of seven participating states in the Igbo apex sociopolitical organization.
Mbata was not considered a front-runner.
Until his withdrawal yesterday, former ex-IG of Police Mike Okiro was the favourite, but his candidacy had been hampered by legal disputes about his actual state of origin. Okiro asserts he is from Rivers state, but some litigants disputed this.
The PG of Ohanaeze Ndigbo is considered the informal leader of the Igbos worldwide, a position that carries enormous political and moral authority.
