The General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr Babatunde Ajayi, announced that in 2024, the agency sealed 619 facilities, including mosques, churches, and hotels, for various environmental infractions.
Dr Ajayi made this statement during Tuesday’s media interactive session in Ikeja, Lagos. In accordance with environmental law enforcement, he noted that noise pollution was responsible for 528 of these closures.
“These operations target households, hotels, and worship centers under the Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017,” he explained.
While acknowledging the agency’s significant achievements in 2024, Dr Ajayi said the agency plans to double its advocacy for environmental awareness in 2025 and focus on stricter enforcement of existing laws.
He outlined plans to intensify efforts to combat noise pollution, enforce anti-smoking regulations by designating smoking and non-smoking zones, and promote proper waste management through authorized disposal..
Additionally, Dr Ajayi explained that public complaints would be addressed more effectively through an expanded complaints centre and digital channels. He also mentioned that academic publications and public awareness campaigns would be increased.
