Justin Trudeau says he will step down as Canada’s prime minister “after the party selects its new leader.“
The 52-year-old PM has been in office for nine years now.
Trudeau said he cares deeply about Canada and wants what’s best for Canadians. He alleged that the parliament has been “paralyzed for months” due to internal battles. The country’s parliament will be suspended until March 24 to choose a new leader.
Mr. Trudeau comes from the Liberal Party of Canada.
The young PM has faced many crises lately, including threats from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to raise tariffs on Canadian exports to the States.

His rating on opinion polls has also plummeted lately. Trudeau was elected three times but lost his majority in 2021. The Conservative Party now leads his Liberal Party by over 20% in polls.
If Trudeau continues, he might lose the next election, scheduled for October 20. Trudeau himself admitted, “This country deserves a real choice in the next election… if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option.“
Trudeau criticized the leader of the Conservatives, Pierre Poilievre’s vision, saying “stopping the fight against climate change doesn’t make sense” and “attacking journalists… is not what Canadians need.” He wants an “ambitious, optimistic view of the future” for Canada.
The Liberal Party will meet to discuss the leadership question soon.
Trump Weighs In
An unforgiving Trump took to his Truth Social account to mock the resigning Trudeau. Still pushing his grandiose aspiration to merge Canada with the United States, Trump suggested that his tariffs threat forced Trudeau to resign, “If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no tariffs, taxes would go down,” he said.
Trudeau’s government was rocked by the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who criticized his “political gimmicks.” Freeland said Canada “cannot afford” these policies, especially with Trump’s tariffs looming.
Trudeau promised “sunny ways” for Canada in 2015, but his premiership has been marked by rising economic discontent. Many Canadians blame his policies for rising inflation and the high cost of living in their country.
