Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja on Saturday, January 4, 2025, on a one day state visit to Enugu State. It will be the president’s first official visit to the state since taking office in 2023.
Among other things, the president was invited to commission several projects executed by the state administration of Governor Peter Mbah.
The announcement of the presidential visit was contained in a statement released on Friday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.
President Tinubu will commission 30 completed and equipped Enugu Smart Green Schools projects, 60 completed primary healthcare centers, and several roads projects.
Onyia’s statement read: “The Enugu State Government is happy to announce the first state visit to the state by the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Saturday, January 4, 2025.
“The president will during the visit commission some of the numerous projects executed by our administration, such as the 30 completed and equipped Enugu Smart Green Schools out of 260 under construction across the 260 wards in the state, 60 completed and equipped Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres out of the 260 under construction across the 260 wards in the state, the completed multi-auditorium and multi-functional Enugu International Conference Centre, 90 completed urban roads in Enugu City, state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre as well as 150 patrol vehicles fitted with AI-embedded surveillance cameras.”

The statement also added that President Tinubu would additionally commission some of the completed rural roads during the one-day visit.
Ohaneze Makes Appeal
One of the most contentious political issues in the South East region is the continued incarceration of the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Kanu has been standing trial since 2021 on sedition charges, but the matter has hit legal brick walls, necessitating the calls by leaders of the region for government to consider a political resolution.

Leveraging on President Tinubu’s visit on Saturday, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Nze Ozichukwu Fidelis Chukwu, on Friday said the President would have written his name in gold if he orders the release of Mr Kanu.
He said the group had taken delightful note of the gradual attitudinal change of the Federal Government under Tinubu towards the Igbo nation.
In the statement released to the media by the organizations, it further said, “It is therefore hoped that with the Enugu visit, President Tinubu will write his name with gold in the hearts of Ndigbo and all the well-meaning Nigerians, if he orders for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

The Igbo socio-cultural group insisted that national peace, unity, patriotism, and sustainable economic development of any country are the outcomes, effects, or products of equity and social justice.
“In other words, there is hardly any society or group that can be complacent under severe existential threats such as orchestrated marginalization, relative deprivations, and external instigation of insecurity, conflagrations, and crises,” the statement read.
Commends Political Leaders
Ohanaeze also commended Gov Mbah for his “disruptive, innovative and massive infrastructural developments in Enugu State; Enugu International Conference Centre, Enugu Smart schools in all the electoral wards of Enugu State, hospitals across the states, resuscitation of Hotel Presidential Enugu, Flour Mills, Nigergas, the construction and rehabilitation of hundreds of roads in the State, etc., within a short period of his administration.”
The statement added: “We also appreciate His Excellency, Sen Hope Odidika Uzodimma, CON, the Chairman of the South East Governors Forum and Chairman of the All Progressive Governors Forum, for the life-saving installation of Night Landing Equipment at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.
“Finally, we wish President Tinubu a safe, joyous and eventful trip as he is treated with the Igbo hospitality in Enugu State.”
