Dark Christmas as Russia Launch Attack on Ukraine’s Energy Infrastructure, Knocking Off Power For Millions

Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure on Christmas Day, deploying over 70 missiles and 100 drones.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, saying, “Every Russian massive strike takes time to prepare. It is never a spontaneous decision. It is a conscious choice not only of targets, but also of time and date“.

He then added pointedly, “Today, Putin deliberately chose Christmas for an attack. What could be more inhumane?

The attack hit several cities, including Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Kyiv, causing power outages and damage to civilian infrastructure.

Ukraine’s forces reportedly shot down at least 50 missiles and many drones, but the strikes still caused significant disruptions.

Ukraine’s energy minister, German Galushchenko, reported that the country’s energy industry was under attack on a mass scale, forcing blackouts.

Even DTEK, Ukraine’s largest energy company, called the attack “cynical” and said it had disrupted their operations.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense isn’t denying it carried out the strikes, proudly saying they targeted “critical energy infrastructure facilities in Ukraine that ensure the operation of the military-industrial complex were hit.

The attack is the latest in a series of mass strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which have knocked out an estimated two-thirds of the country’s electrical generation capacity as of November.

It may not be on Christmas Day, but Ukraine has hit Russia’s oil and energy sites in the past with devastating consequences as well.
