Renowned human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has been released from prison after fulfilling his bail conditions. He is reported to be on his way home.
Farotimi, a 56-year-old lawyer and author, was arrested in Lagos on December 3 for allegedly defaming Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University.
He was granted bail by both the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti, with a ₦50 million bond and one surety, and the Chief Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, with a ₦30 million bond and two sureties. However, his release was delayed due to administrative hurdles.
Following his release, Farotimi expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support, saying, “I am not unmindful of the sacrifices made by many.”
Then he oddly said, “It’s not an easy journey when you’re fighting evil. The truth is the only weapon with which you can slay the monster called Nigeria.“

Apparently insisting on his claims in his controversial book, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System“, Farotimi defiantly added, “In my public advocacy and fights and wars against this evil empire we all live in, I have never lied against anyone.“
Farotimi’s case has been adjourned to January 29, 2025.
One of his bail conditions prohibits him from speaking to the press.
