Politics meets entertainment with Anambra-born Nollywood star Yul Edochie, who has contested the Nigerian presidency and his state’s governorship at least once each.
Mr Edochie seems to be stirring the political hornet’s nest again with his latest Instagram post, tacitly revealing his ambition to run for the gubernatorial seat of Anambra State.
The state is due for election in November 2025.
On his official Instagram, Edochie shared a photo of himself with Seyi Tinubu, President Bola Tinubu’s son.
In the post, he appeared to endorse Seyi Tinubu as a potential governor for Lagos State. “The next Governor of Lagos State with The next Governor of Anambra State. SEALED”
The post has stirred discussions about his possible run again. While he seems to have a star-power effect on citizens, his charm has never helped him make any significant inroads on election day.
Recently, the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) responded to the growing clamour for Seyi Tinubu, saying the state’s governorship position shouldn’t be seen as a family inheritance.
Seyi’s father, the president, served as governor of the state from 1999-2007
PDP spokesperson Hakeem Amode remarked, “Lagos will not serve him,” referring to any idea of Seyi Tinubu succeeding Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Amode warned, “If the Tinubu faction uses the same tactics as in Ondo and Edo states, they will face strong resistance.”
Unlike in Anambra State, where the incumbent governor, Chukwuma Soludo, will be seeking a second term, Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu will complete his constitutional maximum of two terms in office in 2027.
The absence of incumbency will open the position to all eligible contestants.
While President Tinubu will be seeking his second term in office, it will be interesting if Seyi Tinubu throws his hat in the ring. This could potentially make it the first time in Nigeria’s history that a father and son are running for such high political offices simultaneously.
