The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its war against counterfeit and unregistered products, shutting down two major illegal operations in Lagos and Abia State this week.
Lagos Operation: Cosmetics
In Ipaye, Lagos, NAFDAC raided an illegal cosmetics production facility, confiscating large quantities of unregistered body washes, soaps, skin-lightening creams, and children’s skincare items.
The agency cited “significant risks to consumers” due to unhygienic conditions and lack of safety standards.
The facility’s products were manufactured without approvals, posing direct threats to public health.
NAFDAC said its surveillance team had been monitoring the facility for weeks before executing the raid.
One individual connected to the operation has been apprehended and is currently assisting investigators.
Abia Operation: Fake and Expired Products
In Abia State, NAFDAC sealed 150 shops at Eziukwu Market, destroying fake and expired products valued at ₦5 billion.
The items included beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food.
The agency described the market as a hub for counterfeit and substandard products.
Dr. Martins Iluyomade, Director of NAFDAC’s South-East Zone, expressed dismay at the continued illegal activities despite a previous undertaking signed by market leaders in December 2023 to expose counterfeiters.
“NAFDAC reiterates its commitment to protecting public health by clamping down on unregulated and unsafe products,” the agency stated. It reaffirmed a zero-tolerance policy for counterfeit practices, working towards a permanent solution.
The agency urged consumers to exercise caution when purchasing products and always to verify registration and expiration dates. It also encourages the public to report suspicious or unregistered items.
