On Monday, Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah inaugurated the Enugu State Geographic Information System (ENGIS).
The governor had previously signed the Enugu State Geographic Information System Service Bill into law.
ENGIS is a system that automates state land administration.
In his address at the inauguration, Mbah said “This is a win for Ndi Enugu because nothing is as crucial as trusting the integrity of a process.”
He said ENGIS would end issues such as land grabbing and unauthorized construction, and he promised the new system would enable title applications to be completed within record 48 hours of application.
It used to take years under the old antiquated manual systems.
“From the comfort of your home, you can apply for titles and get results almost immediately,” Mbah added.
The administration promised to grow the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the $4.4 billion it met in 2023 to $30 billion in four to eight years, and fixed assets are an integral part of that growth projection.
“If you look at the major indicators of the ease of doing business, you will notice that two items there, the ease of obtaining your title and ease of obtaining a construction permit, are core indicators.
“So, what we are launching today would enable us to accomplish our economic growth target because, with ENGIS, you can start and complete your title application within 48 hours.
“It will also create transparency in our land management and administration. Thus, the era of opacity in our land transactions is also gone because you can now view everything,” the governor said.
Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development Barr. Chimaobi Okorie alluded to improved benefits to the state’s revenue profile.
Dr. Cyril Ezeama, the coordinator of ENGIS, specifically said the new automated system should generate an estimated ₦300 billion annually for the state in revenues.
“ENGIS is the first of its kind in Nigeria. Land applications can now be completed entirely online,” Ezeama added.
Community leaders and stakeholders praised the governor for his digital innovation and pledged support for his developmental agenda.
